New leaders named for three strategic initiatives

2018 brings new challenges, new opportunities and new leadership to our UC ANR Strategic Initiatives. Please join us in welcoming four new SI leaders for three of our five initiatives.

The future leaders

The strategic initiative leaders play a key role in unifying, communicating and advocating to promote the science and impact of the work of UC ANR. A key undertaking for the SI leaders in 2018 will be to revisit and evolve the role of the initiatives themselves, identifying how the strategic initiatives can better help us advance the UC ANR agenda of touching the lives of 40 million Californians.

The new SI leaders include

  • Jim Farrar, director of UC Integrated Pest Management Program, for Endemic and Invasive Pests and Diseases (EIPD)
  • David Lile, UCCE director in Lassen County, for Sustainable and Natural Ecosystems (SNE)
  • Neil McRoberts, associate professor of plant pathology at UC Davis, and Deanne Meyer, UCCE specialist in animal science at UC Davis, for Sustainable Food Systems (SFS)

Effective Jan. 2, Farrar, Lile, McRoberts and Meyer will succeed the SI leaders who are rotating out.

We thank Cheryl Wilen (EIPD), David Doll (SFS) and John Harper (SNE) for their service as SI leaders. As one colleague put it, we are grateful “for your contributions to the SIs and to the SI process in general. Your professionalism and friendship have made the past few years a pleasure.”

The continuing leaders

We also thank Keith Nathaniel, who leads the Healthy Families and Communities initiative, and Doug Parker, who leads the Water Quality, Quantity and Security initiative, for their ongoing commitment to bring their leadership, experience and wisdom to advance the SIs and the UC ANR agenda.

For any questions about the strategic initiatives, please contact Wendy Powers, associate vice president, at wendy.powers-schilling@ucop.edu, or Mark Bell, vice provost for strategic initiatives and statewide programs, at mozbell@ucanr.edu.
