Join UC Master Gardeners Trudy Adair-Verbais and Janet Rogers for a free workshop about how to grow vegetables and ornamentals in straw bales instead of in the ground.  This ingenious solution is perfect for gardeners dealing with small spaces, compacted or rocky soil, or physical limitations.  Plus straw bale gardening is easy, inexpensive and fun!  You'll receive helpful hand-outs, see demonstration bales, and learn the basics of creating a straw bale garden in your own backyard.

Growing Orchids in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara County Master Gardeners announce a free public workshop entitled “Growing Orchids in Santa Barbara” to be presented on Saturday, March 3, 2018, from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in the Faulkner Gallery of the Santa Barbara Central Library, 40 E. Anapamu Street in downtown Santa Barbara. 

Instructors: Master Gardener Leonard Grabowski is an orchid enthusiast with a collection of outdoor orchids that he enjoys. Donald Brown is a retired professor from UCSB who has been managing orchids for many years as an expert grower and demonstrator.

Topics: how to select and grow many of the most popular orchids easily. Basic growing tips including environmental factors such as light levels, watering, planting media, and fertilizing, as well as how to deal with common problems will be presented.
